About this event

Did you know California is home to over 5,000 species of native plants and that more than 700 bird species have been observed within the state? Despite this incredible richness, much of California’s native flora is now in peril, with many species threatened, endangered, or on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss, development, and invasive species.

This presentation explores the history behind these changes and highlights how individuals can play a meaningful role in restoring habitat through grassroots efforts at home. We’ll discuss the deep connections between native plants and birds, and how thoughtfully designed gardens can provide food, shelter, and nesting opportunities for local wildlife.

Participants will learn how to plan, plant, and maintain a California native plant garden tailored to their local conditions, while being introduced to many of the birds that commonly visit our yards, parks, and open spaces. By the end of the talk, you’ll come away with practical tools and inspiration to help bring birds back into your own landscape.
