Please share and distribute widely — Property owners PLEASE STOP and THINK before you move around the ashes of your structures. Mariposa County Environmental Health is working with state agencies to help you. These agencies will clean up damaged structures on your property and haul and dispose of the material. The typical cost of clean up is $50,000 – $80,000 per site, that YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY (because you’ve already paid with your taxes). BUT, the state agencies won’t cover the cost IF you have moved quantities of material around and piled it up. These agencies will also bag and remove toxic materials (batteries, asbestos, paints, etc). Insurance typically will only cover $8,000 – $10,000.
If you want to sift through the ashes and rubble, be sure to wear protective clothing – an N95 respirator type mask, long sleeves and pants, gloves and boots – because hazardous materials may be present and can be damaging to your health. If you have questions, contact Mariposa County Environmental Health Department at 209-966-2220.
