The new exhibit, AVIAN: Birds in a Changing World, is a natural blend of the missions of two California non-profit organizations based in the Sierra Foothills surrounding Yosemite National Park. Yosemite Audubon’s mission focuses on conserving and restoring natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, their habitats, and on educating and inspiring others to help protect them. Sierra Art Trails mission is to support working artists by promoting their work, fostering visual arts and art education, and benefitting the community by establishing a reputation for the region as an arts destination. Working together in this exhibit, these organizations promote the visual representation of birds and their lives through the work of local artists.
When considering submissions for “AVIAN: Birds in a Changing World,” artists should look at the many aspects of birds in our lives and know that their images may include beautiful depictions of birds, as well as images that address issues critical to our times. Pollution. Climate Change. Human causes of bird endangerment. It might be helpful to approach environmental concerns through images of birds that give us both hope and concern. Birds that are in their natural habitat, healthy and free. Birds in a compromised habitat where they are struggling and their numbers are dwindling. Let this exhibit challenge how you see birds in your life.
